Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 in October 2025. If you're still running it, you're on borrowed time. Here's everything North Ridgeville residents need to know about upgrading to Windows 11.

What "End of Support" Actually Means

Windows 10 still works. It doesn't shut off or stop running. But Microsoft no longer releases:

  • Security patches for newly-discovered vulnerabilities
  • Bug fixes
  • Driver updates for new hardware
  • Feature updates

The security issue is the real problem. New vulnerabilities are discovered in Windows constantly. On Windows 10, those vulnerabilities will never be patched. Over time, staying on Windows 10 becomes increasingly risky — especially for banking, email, and anything sensitive.

Can Your Computer Run Windows 11?

Windows 11 has strict hardware requirements:

  • Processor: Compatible 64-bit chip. Roughly 8th-generation Intel Core or newer, or AMD Ryzen 2000 series or newer.
  • RAM: 4GB minimum (8GB recommended)
  • Storage: 64GB minimum
  • TPM 2.0: A security chip that many older computers don't have
  • UEFI BIOS: With Secure Boot enabled
  • Graphics: DirectX 12 compatible

The TPM 2.0 requirement is what trips up most older computers. Computers made before 2018 often don't have it.

How to Check If Your Computer Is Compatible

Microsoft offers a "PC Health Check" app. Download it from Microsoft's website and run it. It'll tell you if your computer is ready for Windows 11.

Or call us — we check compatibility for free during our regular checkups.

What If My Computer Isn't Compatible?

You have a few options:

Option 1: Buy a New Computer

Any computer sold in the last few years supports Windows 11. If your current machine is old enough that it can't upgrade, it might be approaching the end of its useful life anyway.

Option 2: Workaround Install

It's technically possible to install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware with workarounds. But Microsoft warns they may not provide updates on these systems, and some features may not work. We can do this for you if you want, but we'll explain the tradeoffs.

Option 3: Switch to Linux or ChromeOS Flex

For older computers used mainly for email, web browsing, and light office work, these alternatives can keep old hardware usable for years. Not for everyone, but a real option.

Option 4: Stay on Windows 10 (Not Recommended)

Your computer still works. But every day, the security risks grow. Don't do this for a computer you use for banking or anything sensitive.

How the Upgrade Process Works

If your computer IS compatible, the upgrade process is:

  1. Back up your data — This is not optional. Upgrades usually go smoothly, but when they don't, having a backup saves you.
  2. Run Windows Update — Check for the Windows 11 upgrade option.
  3. Download and install — Takes 2-4 hours depending on your internet and computer speed.
  4. First boot adjustments — Windows 11 looks different. Centered taskbar, new Start menu, different settings.
  5. Verify programs still work — Most do. Some old programs don't.
  6. Update drivers — Let Windows Update find the latest drivers.

Common Issues After Upgrading

  • Old software stops working — Especially very old programs. Usually fixable with compatibility settings.
  • Printer problems — Sometimes drivers need updating.
  • Missing Windows 10 features — The new Start menu, simplified right-click menu, and centered taskbar are divisive.
  • Performance issues — Usually fix themselves after a few reboots as Windows updates settle in.

What Windows 11 Is Actually Like

Once you get past the visual changes, Windows 11 is very similar to Windows 10. It's faster, more secure, and looks more modern. Most users adjust within a few days. Some features (snap layouts, improved search) are genuinely improvements.

Should You DIY or Get Help?

The upgrade usually works fine. But when it doesn't, you can end up with a computer that won't boot or lost files. If you're not confident, get help. We handle Windows 11 upgrades for North Ridgeville residents — compatibility check, backup, upgrade, verify. Everything. No stress.
